Non-Invasive Saliva Tests and Traditional Nasal Swabs
CommunityLab promotes better health and quality of life for Asheville, NC residents. We deliver research-driven, evidence-based solutions to help fight COVID-19. We offer non-invasive saliva collection tests and traditional nasal swabs to determine if you have COVID-19. Both tests collect a sample of your RNA for diagnosis. We invite you to register for curbside COVID-19 Delta variant testing if you have been exposed to someone with COVID-19 or have symptoms. Our testing also detects the Omicron variant.
Viral PCR SalivaDirect™ Method (Saliva) Test – No Swab
The COVID-19 saliva test is easier for most patients. A patient spits into a tube as a non-invasive style of testing. It’s a fast, highly sensitive test. This polymerase chain reaction (PCR) saliva test for COVID-19 detects the virus’ genetic material in its samples at similar rates as nasal swabs. The Yale School of Public Health developed the cutting-edge method known as SalivaDirect™ used by CommunityLab to make testing quick, easy, and comfortable.
Nasopharyngeal Swab Test
A nasopharyngeal swab test, or molecular test, is done with a long nasal swab inserted into the nasal cavity. The PCR test takes fluid from the back of your nose to accurately detect COVID-19’s genetic material. The rapid antigen tests for COVID-19 sometimes produce false positives, but false positives are rare with PCR lab testing.
Common COVID-19 Symptoms
If you have any symptoms of COVID-19, we encourage you to contact us to register for a test as soon as possible. The most common COVID-19 symptoms include:
- Shortness of breath
- Fever
- Persistent cough
- Loss of taste and smell

Which Test Is Best For COVID-19?
We offer both saliva and nasopharyngeal COVID-19 tests. Both are highly sensitive tests, leading to the least false positives possible. The nasopharyngeal sample collection provides a slight level of discomfort for many people and requires a trained health professional to administer. A saliva test can be self-administered at our drive-up location in Arden, NC or in the comfort of your home with our no swab home saliva collection kit. Both tests have a relatively rapid turnaround time. Contact us to help determine the best test to fit your needs.
Your Local Choice For Testing
CommunityLab understands that COVID-19 hasn’t stopped spreading across Western North Carolina (WNC). We know that rapid identification of the virus is essential to helping stop it. Our rapid and reliable testing combined with contact tracing, social distancing, and quarantining helps stop this virus. The WNC region is home to underserved, minority communities that may not have access to this type of testing on a regular basis.
